Maitlands was a storage facility separate from the main store. Like Ebenezer House, entrance was via an old wooden staircase with a corrugated roof with scaffolding supports.
A surprise awaited new comers, a safe at the bottom of the stairs!
Inside, the building was a series of store rooms packed to the rafters with goods.

Your correct Jane. Maitlands was previously the jewellers premises situated in Queens Road.
I thought Maitlands was the name of the jewellers that moved to the top end of the town – perhaps that explains the safe?
