Construction and Opening

2007 was a big year for the city of Cambridge, Robert Sayle was getting ready to close it’s doors after nearly 170 years and pave the way for the Partnership to bring a bold new John Lewis to the area. With a modern glass exterior and three times as much selling space as it’s predecessor the new building in Downing Street boasts a Brasserie and Espresso Bar.

But it is not a wholesale removal of the Partnership’s links to the Robert Sayle name and heritage in the area. The buildings adjacent to the new build on St Andrew’s Street will be incorporated into the new development as office space, with some buildings dating back to the 18th Century.

On Thursday 8th November, John Lewis Cambridge opened its doors for the first time. Three years in the making and indeed three times larger than the temporary site that Robert Sayle was previously occupying, the new branch has a lot to offer the city of Cambridge.
