The Olympic bid and how it produced John Lewis Stratford City
The Olympic bid
Sport and the Partnership have been inexorably linked since the creation of the latter. In its many guises, sport has been actively encouraged throughout the Partnership. Upon the announcement in 2005 that London would bid to host the 2012 Olympic games, the Partnership wasted no time in becoming the only retailer to back the bid, offering ‘champion level’ support, therefore becoming an official backer.
The Partnership heads a multi-million pound investment
When London was confirmed as the host city of the Olympic Games for the first time in 64 years, the Partnership pledged its support once more. In 2006, the Partnership was confirmed as the first retailer to invest in a multi-million pound investment in Stratford City, the heart of East London. A full John Lewis department store and a Waitrose Food Hall were confirmed as the anchors of the proposed Westfield’s Stratford City retail project, a development that would be constructed exactly adjacent from the scheduled Olympic Park.
