This snippet just shows how unusual it was for customers to serve themselves. Before the 1950s it was unheard of for customers to pick up the goods from the shelves. They would have had to wait to be served by one of the assistants in the department -and few people thought this self service trend would catch on – little did they know!
The Baker referred to in this snippet was Mr “Max” Baker who was the Partnership’s Director of Selling at that time. He later became the Director of Trading and was one of the strong leaders of the Partnership in the years after World War II. He retired from the business in 1967.
But who could Mr Jingle be???

When I published this page, the only Mr. Baker I thought of was Stanley Baker who was the ‘Assistant General Manager’, later to be ‘General Manager’ of the old Trewins. How interesting to find out the ‘real’ Mr Baker.
