Leith Service building

The exterior of the Leith Service building, c1970s

The Leith Service centre was built in June 1973, and opened to coincide with the brand new John Lewis Edinburgh in the St James Centre. Historically, Leith had become one of the largest ports on the east coast of Scotland, and with good links to Edinburgh, seemed like the obvious place for the service centre location. In fact, one of the trickiest elements about working at Leith was delivering to the remote locations around Scotland!

An extension of John Lewis Edinburgh in 1988 was not matched by an expansion of the service building until a three storey extension was added 6 years later.
