A new retail scheme

In the Gazette of the 12th July 2007, the Partnership announced its intentions to trial a scheme brand new to the Partnership. To deal with the growing number of customer returns from its selling branches, proposals were declared to open up an outlet shop. The shop would open in the McArthurGlen Outlet village in Swindon in December 2007. The Partnership’s latest brainchild would join over 100 other retailers in the largest covered designer outlet village in Europe, in the restored Great Western Railway works situated near Swindon Town Centre. Managed by John Lewis Cribbs Causeway, the outlet would mainly specialise in the sale of either furniture or white goods. Goods would either be customer returns or slightly damaged.

Twin benefits

The purpose of the outlet store was twofold. Firstly, it would offer customers great products at fantastic value, and being the only John Lewis within 45 miles, would offer customers a wonderful introduction to the Partnership. Secondly, the trial would allow other branches to concentrate their efforts on the selling of their own stock, rather than having to concern themselves with returned or damaged goods.
