Suitable design

An artist’s impression of John Lewis High Wycombe highlights just how different this store was intended to be, compared to other department stores in the Partnership. The design was selected in order to reflect the current surroundings and location, as well as the stock it was selling. As can be seen below, it looks more far more like a furniture shop than it does a clothes retailer, and this was certainly intentional.The building would consist over two floors. The selling floors would be flanked by warehousing on the one side, and offices and Partner amenities on the other. The department store was scheduled to open just one year later in August 1988.

Just three months on from the first digger moving in, and the skeleton of the shop had been created. The roof was no ready to go up, unconventionally long before any walls were erected.
