The Grand Opening of John Lewis Edinburgh
An ideal home
On Tuesday 7th August 1973, John Lewis Edinburgh finally opened its doors to the general public. The amalgamation of Silk Shop with John Lewis was now officially complete. As can be seen below, demand from the public was immediate! The St James centre had also opened, and it was immediately obvious that the centre was an ideal home for the Partnership.
A dream achieved
The Partnership had achieved one of its dreams, opening a fully functional department store in Scotland. This was a watershed moment. It proved that the Partnership could take their fully-fledged format to the most diverse of areas and triumph. Most importantly, John Lewis Edinburgh could be just the beginning. The success of this department store paved the way for proposals for a department store in Aberdeen, and later on in Glasgow.
