Decline and Closure, 1977

A soon-to-be Waitrose Partner holding the last pair of shoes to be found in the Daniel Neal Bournemouth stockroom

Out of options

The decision to close the two remaining branches, announced in the Gazette of 15th January 1977, was the result of changes in the nature of the school outfitting business. Sales were not consistently good enough to cover the operating costs of the small shops. Although trade boomed in the weeks before a new school term, it then understandably plummeted once the children were back at school. Additionally, by the 1970’s the Partnership’s department stores stocked their own ranges of school-wear, making the utility of Daniel Neal almost entirely defunct. Daniel Neal Bournemouth and Cheltenham were both closed permanently on 7th October 1977.
