The Partnership had a very active Garden Society which encouraged Partners to learn about gardening, exchange tips and go on visits to gardens around the country. A popular location for the visits was the estate owned by the Partnership at Leckford in Hampshire. In the next village lived the Founder of the Partnership, John Spedan Lewis, who was himself a very keen gardener and naturalist. Visits to his home, Longstock House, and the extensive gardens were seen as a great privilege and were often organised by a leading member of the Society, Miss Dorothy Glasspole, the hairdressing manager at Trewins.
These pictures were taken on a trip to Longstock in 1955, the year the Founder retired and he can be seen in the centre of the picture in his plus fours with his daughter Jill. Miss Glasspole is the lady in the front row with the raincoat and hat, second from the right, front row.
A great day out
