Aquisition into the Partnership, 1984

The Gazette welcomes John Lewis Welwyn

Preparatory work

In the eleven month period between announcing the takeover and the official of assimilation into the Partnership, extensive refurbishment was undertaken in order to align the store with the rest of the branches in terms of stock and ambience. The food hall was shut down, prompting a huge reshuffle and the addition of some new departments in the resulting space, including a radio and television department.

Three existing departments unique to Welwyn were in fact retained, identified by the Partnership as strong additions to their own range. These included a substantial book section, plants and flowers and men’s hairdressing. The book department proved so popular that it was taken up by other shops in the Partnership.

The wait is over

Finally, on the 30th July 1984, Welwyn Department Store was welcomed into the John Lewis Partnership, becoming John Lewis Welwyn in the process.
