  • I was taken to London by my Dad to see the Coronation, and as I was only 7 years old at the time I had to be put on his shoulders so that I could see what was going on. Not only was I on his shoulders he had also bought me a ‘periscope’ to see over the heads of the crowd.

  • I was in the last year of my junior school and we had a ballot in the class as to who would go to the embankment. Crosses were put on bits of paper to be drawn out of a hat, and I was lucky enough to pick a cross so was able to go. Along with lots of other children, although it rained all day, it was very exciting. When I came home I went to the neighbour across the road who had a television, just in time to watch the crowning.

  • How fortunate to be able to watch the Coronation on television. Not everyone had them in 1953, unlike today when most homes have two or more. We didn’t have access to one, so my mother took my brother and me to the Mall to see the procession. As the Royal coach neared a soldier lifted me onto his shoulders to have a better view. I was eight. I cheered as the coach went past and I like to think that the Queen saw me and waved to me.
