John Lewis holds various workshops for customers who wish to learn or improve their skills at knitting or crochet. These are held in the store and are arranged by the in house Rowan (wools) consultant. Freddie Patmore, Rowan-Watford, recently arranged a workshop on freeform knitting and crochet.
Heike Gittins, designer, took the class through various inspirational ideas and exhibited some of her own projects before letting everyone go mad with their needles, hooks and beautiful yarns.
Heike’s story
This is Heike’s story about the day, reproduced from her web site.
“Last week I spent a fair amount of time away from home. I based myself in London and travelled from there to teach workshops in the surrounding area.
On Tuesday I was invited to do a workshop on Freeform knitting & crochet at John Lewis’s store in Watford. I was greeted by the lovely Freddie, our in store Rowan Consultant, in the most enthusiastic and welcoming manner, who had layed out everything required ready in the training room we were using. Six ladies arrived, including Juliet Bernard, Editor of ‘The Knitter’ magazine. No pressure then!
Everyone had brought bags full of yummy yarns and soon heads were spinning with decisions about colour schemes and what sort of ‘scrumble’ to make first.
I had provided some sample patterns for various scrumbles to get everyone started, but it wasn’t long before new ideas were ‘buzzing’ around the room. We hardly had time to stop for lunch and by the end of the day everyone had produced a lovely example of what happens when you let your mind run Free!”
Future workshops
The day was great fun. If this has wetted your appetite to take a workshop; details of future courses are available from the haberdashery department as are dates for the Knit & Chat club.
