Sign of the Times

Early Trewins sign
JLP Archive Collection

During a clear out of her loft in 1988 a Trewins customer came across this sign which advertises Trewins the drapers.  We don’t know how old the sign is, but we do know that it must date from the period before Arthur Trewin was joined in the business by his brother Henry.  That means that it was created between 1887 and 1902.

Advertising in the Watford Observer It was in 1887 that we have the first record of Arthur Trewin advertising in the Watford Observer
