From the private collection of Sally Veysey

This photo was taken at a presentation to Guide Dogs for the Blind.

When submitting the photo Sally Veysey, retired partner, said “my mother, Hilda May and Connie Beak both worked in the PDR”  [partners’ dining room.]  “I think the two unnamed ladies on the left worked in stock accounting with Mrs Glenister.”

  • The lady second from the left is Eileen Thompson, a Scottish lady who was Dennis Rastrick’s clerk in Radio & TV.  She spent the majority of her time making up Rotadex cards of customer’s purchase details for guarantees.  I worked with her around 1976.

John Singlehurst was already firmly installed in the service desk with Dawn and Mrs Ball?   Notable members of staff were Robin Nattley, Mike Ackroyd, Dick Craig, Frank Hine, Ted Glenister; and two fellows named Dave and Philip who took a proactive approach to shoplifting one day by persuing a shoplifter round behind Woolworths to retrieve a portable television!

  • One of my retired Partners Sally Veysey gave us this picture.  Her mother is Hilda May; centre holding the ‘Guide Dog’.  This model still holds a special place in our Trophy Cabinet situated in the Partners Rest Room in the new shop and can also be clearly seen in the photograph of our Rest Room in the old shop.  The Garden Society at Watford are also proud that we have a society cup donated by Sally in memory of her dear Mum for the ‘Best Bloom’
