Whether it was from measurements brought in by customers or by planners going out to the house, estimates were given for most types of floor covering. Anything from good quality carpet to vinyl flooring or even quarry tiles for kitchens and bathrooms could be quoted for and fitted.

These photographs are of the carpet department in the new building, when Trewins was enlarged in the early sixties.
I joined the Partnership, aged 15 in 1958 starting in carpets, which at the time was housed in a very large Nissen hut. The Manager was Oliver Timson who went on to manage the carpet department in Oxford Street. He also managed the Furniture and Garden Furniture departments and was also deputy general manager, the number two in the branch. Jack Coles was the section manager.
I also remember Norman Castelete, John Grieve, Bob Sharp, Frank Hine, George Knight and Bob Taylor from these departments.
I recall the day (Sir) Elton John came to order carpets (circa 1978); he was wearing furry ankle boots!
The office was situated behind the fitted carpet selection.
I met David Bayford in 1973 when he was a Section Manager in the carpet department, and we have been married for 32 years.
