Kinghams first floor

Most of the first floor of Kinghams was allocated to staff training and the sales and stock accounting suites.  Both appear spacious compared to those in use today.

Lots of typewriters can be seen in the photographs.  Trewins didn’t have computers and monitors on each desk like today.

The machines in the staff training room are tills.  After their induction training, where new partners learnt all about the company, till training was a priority.

The water heater looks rather archaic but obviously served its purpose as did the carpet hoist.

  • I think this is me in picture eight.  Our section Manager was Lottie Chapman.  Next door to us was correspondence under the leadership of Joan Glennister.  When correspondence moved to the shop the Clerks Pool was introduced and was ran by Barbara McEwen.  All the department clerks from the shop gradually moved over when Barbara left and moved to Cambridge.  Shelia Rattray (now Thorpe) became our DM with Karen Evans (now in special orders) our section manager.  Later when Lottie left, stock accounting and the clerks pool joined together to become Central Clerical.

  • Picture eight, showing partners working in the sales and stock accounting office; I think the lady in the centre is Christine Gash.
