The high flying 1980s
Space shortages once again
The success at the opening of John Lewis Edinburgh was more than just a passing phase. Business thrived and by the beginning of the 80’s showed no sign of cooling off. In fact, even by the end of the 70’s it became apparent that once again, space was running out. It was no surprise therefore that by the mid 80’s, the Partnership announced its plans for major extension work to take place at John Lewis Edinburgh. This was coupled with proposals to refurbish the entire St James Centre.
Three stage refurbishment
The refurbishment, which due to its vast nature was undertaken in three stages, was completed on the 11th October 1988. Now fully up to date and a thing of beauty, the extension increased the selling space 50%, making the store the fifth biggest John Lewis branch. That had set the branch up to embrace the new century in style.
