On 7th August 1973, John Lewis Edinburgh opened its doors to the public. The amalgamation of Silk Shop with John Lewis was now officially complete.  The St James Centre had also opened, an ideal home for the Partnership.

The Partnership had achieved its ambition of opening a department store in Scotland. This was a watershed moment. It proved that the Partnership could take its  format to all parts of the UK and succeed.  The success of this department store paved the way for proposals for a store in Aberdeen, and later on in Glasgow.
