Construction

John Lewis Cardiff in progress

Making a splash

Construction on the new store was quickly underway. By 2008, one year off opening, the site was already making its mark. At the end of April 2008, the department store was ‘topped out’ by Gareth Thomas, Director, Retail and Design and Development, John Lewis. Gareth finished the job off by tightening the highest bolt on the building.

On the first lane towards opening day

By June, the wider vision for Cardiff was rapidly materialising, as construction soldiered on at a rate of knots. The David’s 2 project would bring £700 million of investment into Cardiff City Centre and attract more than £250 million in spending. In a bid to build on its industrial past, much of the regeneration of the city centre focused on substantial renovation of the port and the waterfront. By early 2009, both St David’s 2 and the John Lewis Branch were nearing completion, and the opening for the branch was confirmed as Thursday 24th September 2009. In this intervening time a large amount of work was put in to ensure that John Lewis Cardiff would be ready. The management were trained and briefed new recruits were put through their paces, and every last aspect of the shop was checked to ensure that it was in tip-top condition for the opening day.
