Unearthing history at Kingston

The excavations at Kingston, from the Gazette of the 3rd January 1987

As the Gazette article above shows, contractors had to remove several fragile medieval relics from the site where the new John Lewis Kingston would stand. The pictures show the removal of the undercroft, an essential part of a medieval house. After it was removed the site, the undercroft was moved to a safe location from where it could be preserved. Had you been in Kingston that day, you would have witnessed the undercroft being whisked through the streets on the back of a truck!
