The War Years, 1939-1945

The demands of wartime impacted workmanship

Strains of War

It is fair to say that Robert Sayle Peterborough got off relatively lightly during the Second World War. The shop struggled with sales, but then it had done before the period of conflict. It was also subject to the demands and strains of war that were enforced throughout the country and indeed the Partnership. This included the call-up of able Partner’s to active service, air warden’s perched on the rooftops of the store, and strict rationing and restrictions on materials. The piece below encapsulates the fascinating struggle between war time conditions and the desire shown by Partners to continue to provide outstanding service
