A live window display at John Lewis Glasgow, as the Partnership expressed its support for the city's Commonwealth Games bid

Five Years Old

By the time that John Lewis Glasgow turned five years old in 2004, the city centre had without doubt become the most important and innovative shopping location outside of London. This was thanks in no small part to the Partnership, its very presence in the city encouraging other retailers into the area, and extensive and widespread regeneration set to take place. The department store also sat proudly adjacent to such cultural delights as the Royal Concert Hall.

Glaswegians had taken the centre of the city to their heart. In fact, research in 2004 speculated that over one third of all Glaswegians visited the city centre shops once every three days.

The Commonwealth Games

John Lewis Glasgow launched its campaign to support Glasgow’s bid for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in 2007, by putting on a live window display featuring gold medal winner Steve Frew. The Partnership was once again the first major retailer to pledge full support. This highlighted the importance that the Partnership continued to place on sports, the community and the fortunes of the city in which they were located.
