In the 1920s the shop floor in the first Welwyn Store had a flavour of a frontier town. As the only shop in the new town, the Stores were originally constructed from wood and was sited on the opposite side of Parkway from the current shop. It supplied all the needs of the new and growing population of the garden city with a range of goods and services which may seem surprising today.
