Decline and Closure, 1970-1977

Bye-bye to Brixton

On the 31st January 1974, the Bon Marche Branch Council were informed of the decision to close down the branch. Although the store was still very popular with a strong local community, it was felt that overall, the store did not fit well into the Partnership’s vision of the future. Preparations thus started for closure. Partners were interviewed about other opportunities in the Partnership, and the shop was prepared for life after the Partnership. Finally, on the weekend of the 7th June 1975, Bon Marche Brixton ceased trading.

One last hurrah

Partners congregated together for a leaving party on Monday 2nd June. 300 Partners celebrated 35 fruitful years in the Partnership, with plenty of fine memories of Bon Marche to take forward into their future walks of life. Although sad to see it go, many Partners especially those moving elsewhere in the Partnership were relishing their new opportunities.
