Construction

The new Facade, 1989

Rapid progress

With all plans given the green light, construction was soon underway. And progress was rapid. In the photograph below, the right side of the picture is the old department store’s selling floor. Meanwhile on the left, the foundations were being dug for the brand new extension. By the time of opening in 1989, the whole area photographed above would be one large selling floor. In order to conform to both the architectural and cultural surroundings, the outside of the building would be clad by pre-cast concrete panels.

Just a year later, and the site had transformed!
