Construction

Impressive and refined

By April 2001, building works were nearing their completion; shop fitting and a recruitment campaign were imminent. The Touchwood centre managed simultaneously to stand as an impressive beacon of modern retail, and yet blended in easily next to Solihull’s older shops. John Lewis Solihull was looking both impressive and refined. Its three selling floors and copious customer restaurant were nearly ready, and were set to be transformed by the shop-fitting team in the months before opening in September. The frontage of the shop was particularly well attended to. The bricks making up the frontage were all handmade, and came adjourned with specially made terracotta tyre tracks. Customers could be under no illusion as to where they were shopping! In the photo on the right, the top half shows progress on John Lewis Solihull, whilst the bottom half places the store in the context of the wider constructin of the Touchwood centre.

Just one year later, and the shop was very nearly complete.
