An enticing opportunity arises…

By the 1990’s, the Partnership had identified Manchester as the next target for a department store. The city had been subject to a large amount of investment throughout the 80s and 90s, and the prospect of representation in the area was an enticing one indeed. And so, when Sainsbury’s came looking for a partner to share a new site, situated just six miles south of the city, the John Lewis Partnership snapped their hand off. The site in question was located in Cheadle, a town in Greater Manchester. A joint team set about planning the development.

…that could open up others

This first attempt at collaboration with another retailer could increase the viability of some locations otherwise off limits to the Partnership. It was also hoped that the Partnership’s first brace into Manchester, if successful, could offset future Partnership retail developments in the North West of England. The announcement of the development was made in the Gazette of 25th May 1991.
