I spotted this for sale at a flea market in Shoreham by Sea last weekend and thought it might be rare or of interest.

Well spotted Richard. This is a Frister and Rossmann transverse shuttle sewing machine from c1890. These were manufactured in Berlin and imported to Britain for sale in department stores until the beginning of the First World War in 1914. Inspired by the American-designed Singer model 12, they were produced in their thousands. They’re not exactly rare but finding one in good working condition could be tricky. What makes the machine you found really interesting is the Peter Jones dealer’s badge – what a great find! A similar example, sold by Heelas of Reading, is on display at the Partnership’s Heritage Centre in Cookham.
